Prof. Dr. Asif R. Khan is an accomplished architect, academician, and researcher with over two decades of experience in architectural education and practice. He currently serves as the Principal of ABATE Institute of Architecture (formerly Al Salama Institute of Architecture) affiliated by University of Calicut, Kerala, India.
A registered architect with the Council of Architecture, India, and a Fellow member of the Indian Institute of Architects, Prof. Dr. Asif R. Khan holds a B.Arch. from MES School of Architecture, University of Calicut, and an M.Arch. from Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture, Nagpur University. He was awarded the Netherlands Fellowship (NFP) and completed a Postgraduate Diploma (PG.Dip.) in Developing Social Housing Projects from the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies, Erasmus University, Rotterdam.
He earned his PhD in Architecture from Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Tamil Nadu—an institution ranked among India's top 30 universities (NIRF 2024, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India). His doctoral research focused on Virtual Design Studios in Architecture, resulting in multiple peer-reviewed WoS/Scopus-indexed publications in international journals such as Open House International (UK), Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering (Japan), SSRN eLibrary (Elsevier, Netherlands), and Journal of the Indian Institute of Architects.
Prof. Dr. Asif R. Khan has played a pivotal role in architectural education and research, holding academic and administrative positions at various institutions across India. He has taught B.Arch., M.Arch., and Ph.D. programs at multiple universities, contributing to the development of future architects and researchers. His expertise has led to engagements with the AA School, London, as a visiting teacher; CEPT University, Ahmedabad, as an academic research scholar; and the CADD Centre Group, a global skill development network. Further, he has professional exposure in the Middle East as well as in India on significant interior and architectural projects.
He has also served as a Member of the Board of Studies in Architecture at the University of Calicut, an Academic Associate for The Indian Institute of Architects - Examination Department, Mumbai and an Empaneled Member of the Council of Architecture, New Delhi.
As a researcher and thought leader, Prof. Khan has presented his work at national and international forums, authored numerous research papers, and serves as a reviewer for leading international journals, including IJAR, Intelligent Buildings International, Discover Sustainability, Journal of The Institution of Engineers (India): Series A, IJCE, and Open House International.
